Membership meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 19) in Tampa
Members and friends of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists --
It's been a while since our last meeting. But six weeks after the national convention has left town, we've got a lot to celebrate and recount.
Our party Aug. 7 at the Florida Aquarium drew nearly 1,500 people to become the largest private party ever held at the facility. And now that we've had some time to rest and rejuvenate, it's time to talk about what's in store for our future.
We will hold our next meeting on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10am at Perkins restaurant,
We're going to talk a bit about how the fundraiser turned out. We also have been invited to participate in a meeting with African journalists at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg; I'll be sharing details. We'll also decide what sort of projects the chapter should tackle in the months to come.

Reporter (Regular Part Time): Gathers, prepares and disseminates news on the air both live in the studio and at remote locations; interviews subjects in the field; cultivates and maintains contacts with news sources. Researches and develops stories for future use; assumes responsibility for final content and presentation of news stories on the air. Candidates must demonstrate skill in writing conversational broadcast copy incorporating appropriate visual elements under daily deadline pressure. He/she must have the skills and experience necessary to make independent editorial decisions in the field. Must have the ability to learn the newsroom’s computer system and be proficient in English grammar, spelling and punctuation; must communicate clearly and deal effectively and politely with the public in person and over the phone. A college degree and a minimum of three year’s of journalism background and television reporting experience preferred. Ability to shoot a plus.

NABJ convention is finally here in Tampa!

The day we've been talking about for years is finally here. The National Association of Black Journalists convention is starting in Tampa today!
If you're registered for the event, I'll look forward to seeing you around the convention site. We could still use your help as a volunteer; stop by the chapter's information table near the registration booths or email volunteer coordinator Ken Knight at kknight@tampatrib.com.
But even if you're not coming, there's still lots of ways you can get involved.
Our Beach Jam Friday night at the Florida Aquarium remains the best way get a taste of the convention, hosted by Tom Joyner and featuring Kid Capri as DJ. Tickets are only $15 and you can buy them in advance here at our Web site, to make admission easy.
We'll be setting up at the Aquarium at 5 p.m., so if you'd like to help set up the party, feel free to join us then. And if you work for a news organization, feel free to tell Tampa Bay what we're doing. Proceeds from the jam benefit our Griot Drum scholarships; this year we're giving out $5,000 to students of color majoring in journalism.
And keep an eye on our Web site for information as the convention progresses.

TBABJ and Times Publishing Co. announce winners of the 2009 Griot Drum scholarships.
TAMPA, FLA. – The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists and St. Petersburg Times have selected four student journalists with Tampa Bay ties to receive $5,000 through the Griot Drum scholarship program.
Three students will receive a $1,000 scholarship and one will receive a scholarship for $2,000. TBABJ and the Times will honor the 2009 recipients during a reception on Thursday, Aug. 6, which takes place during the National Association of Black Journalists Convention, held this year in Tampa from Aug. 5 thru 9.
Funds for the scholarship were generously provided by the Times Publishing Co.'s foundation.
This year’s 2009 TBABJ Scholarship winners are: Raena Boston, a rising senior at the University of South Florida; Ashley Brandon, a rising senior at the University of South Florida; Carmel Delshad, a rising senior at the University of South Florida; and Eugenio Torrens, a rising junior at the University of Florida.
TBABJ will reveal which student earned the $2,000 award at a special reception at the group's suite in the Mariott Waterside hotel at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6. More details on the event will be posted at www.TBABJ.com.
A committee of local journalists evaluated students based on applications that included resumes, work samples, school transcripts and an essay analyzing the media’s coverage of a recent news story involving race, class or religion.
The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists strives to help ensure diversity in area media and accurate, balanced coverage of communities of color while serving as a resource for both established and aspiring communicators of African descent.
Founded as the Suncoast Black Communicators, the group became the Tampa Bay area’s affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists in 1990. TBABJ now represents journalists of color in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties along the Suncoast of Florida.
